 It's that time of the year again.....Flu Season!
 
Let’s talk about the two types of influenza vaccines......
 
1. Inactivated (killed) vaccine, or what we call the flu shot which is given by injections into a muscle.
 
2. Live (weakened) this is sprayed into the nostrils.
 
For those 65 years and older there is a high dose of inactivated vaccine available. Talk to your primary physician for more information.

1.What is Influenza?
 
Influenza  is a contagious disease, which is caused by the influenza virus.
 
2. How is it spread?
 
Influenza an be spread by sneezing, coughing, or any type of nasal secretions.
 
3. Who are most infected?
 
Children, are most infected with influenza,  however anyone can get it.
 
4. What are the symptoms associated with the "flu"?
 
Some symptoms associated with the "flu" are sore throat, chills, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, cough.
 
5. Can certain conditions make it worse?
 
People with conditions that affect the heart, lungs, or kidney disease or anyone who immune system is compromised can become a lot sicker.
 
6. What are some of the problems with the flu and children?
 
The flu can also cause seizures and diarrhea in children.
 
7. Who should get the flu shot?
 
People who are six month of age and  older should get the flu shot; especially health care workers.
 
8. Who should not get the vaccine?
 
Anyone with an egg allergy or anyone who had an allergic reaction in the past should not get the vaccine. If you ever had Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) talk to your Primary physician to see if the vaccine is recommended for you or if you are unsure if you should take the vaccination.
 
*Thousands of people die from seasonal influenza, or require hospitalizations. The flu can cause high fever and even pneumonia. Remember vaccines normally take about 2 weeks to get in your system to provide protection, and usually last about one year from date of vaccination.
